A good integration preserves your existing data model, your permissions, and your auditability. A bad integration creates a shadow AI stack that no one owns. Here is how we keep it on the right side of that line.

What AI integration services actually mean

AI integration services are the engineering work of connecting AI models — usually LLMs, sometimes vision or speech — into an application you already run. That means SDKs, APIs, data pipelines, auth, observability, and evaluation, all wrapped around an existing system of record.

  • Embedding LLM features (summarisation, search, Q&A) inside an existing CRM, ERP, or ticketing tool.
  • Adding document understanding to legacy workflow systems.
  • Wiring voice or vision models into mobile and web apps via APIs.
  • Replacing brittle rule engines with hybrid rules + LLM pipelines.

Integration vs rewrite: how to choose

A rewrite is the right call when the existing system cannot be safely extended — no APIs, no tests, no owners. Integration is the right call in every other scenario, and it is almost always faster, cheaper, and less risky.

Do not rewrite to add AI

If the existing system works and someone owns it, integrate. Rewrites that start as AI initiatives are the leading cause of AI projects that die in year two.

Four integration architecture patterns that ship

1. Sidecar service

A separate microservice owns the AI interaction. Your existing app calls it over HTTP. This is the safest starting point for most teams: you can iterate on the AI without touching core business logic.

2. Embedded via SDK

The AI provider’s SDK is called inline from your app. Fastest to ship, but couples your release cycle to the AI layer. Good for prototypes, risky in regulated stacks.

3. Event-driven enrichment

Your system emits events (ticket created, contract uploaded). A downstream AI worker enriches the record and writes back. Clean, auditable, and the easiest to scale.

4. Proxy-and-augment

An AI layer sits in front of an API and augments responses — search results, generated summaries, chat handoffs. Powerful but demands careful caching and cost control.

Risk, guardrails, and the boring stuff that matters

  • Auth and scoping — the AI must inherit user permissions, not bypass them.
  • PII handling — decide what leaves your VPC and what never does.
  • Cost limits — hard per-tenant and per-request caps, not just dashboards.
  • Evaluation — a regression suite that runs on every deploy, not ad-hoc.
  • Fallbacks — what happens when the AI provider is down is a product decision.

Realistic timeline for an AI integration

A well-scoped AI integration services engagement, against an existing system with reasonable APIs, lands in production in six to twelve weeks. Discovery and data work take the first three; everything else is engineering and rollout.
